The Alton Museum of History and Art is located on the campus of the SIU Dental School. It was founded in 1971 and was placed in Loomis Hall which was built in 1832 by the Baptists as the first building of Shurtleff College. There are several exhibits located in the museum featuring art and history of the Alton area and its citizens. Some of the exhibits are the Wadlow Room, dedicated to telling the story of the tallest man in the world, Robert Pershing Wadlow; the Pioneer Room, which features the exploits of Lewis and Clark and plight of the prisoners in the Confederate Prisons located in Alton; the Underground Railroad Exhibit, which tells the role that Alton played in helping runaway slaves; the Elijah Lovejoy Exhibit, an Alton printer who lost his live defending his anti-slavery beliefs; and several other exhibits. The museum can be toured Wednesday through Saturday by calling the museum. An admission fee is charged.
